The Problem: A System Built for a Different World

What education is
Public education is a large-scale system designed to shape human minds. It organizes learning into subjects, sequences those subjects across years, and evaluates individuals based on their ability to perform on standardized tasks. At its best, it transmits hard-won knowledge and creates shared cultural foundations. At scale, it relies on structure, predictability, and measurement.
This structure reflects a set of assumptions about how humans learn:
knowledge can be accumulated piece by piece
reasoning is largely an individual activity
performance can be assessed independently of context
What the system was built for
Modern schooling took shape in a world where change (cultural, informational, technological) was slower and more predictable. Knowledge had long half-lives. Career paths were relatively stable. It was reasonable to design a system that emphasized accumulation in the form of "learn it now, use it later."
Under those conditions, a focus on individual performance and standardized progression made sense. The system could reliably produce learners who were well-adapted to the environments they were likely to encounter.
Why it is struggling now
The conditions that justified that design have shifted. Cultural, informational, and technological change now move at a pace that shortens the useful life of specific knowledge. Information is distributed, problems are less clearly defined, and solutions often require coordination across people and domains. The environments students will enter are more dynamic, more complex, and less predictable.
At the same time, our understanding of human cognition has evolved. Minds are not built to store complete, stable models of the world. They operate with partial, simplified representations, rely heavily on other people and external tools, and refine understanding through interaction. Learning is not purely individual, but rather cultural, cumulative, and context-dependent.
This creates a growing mismatch between how the system is designed and how learning actually works.
The system emphasizes recall and individual performance, while real-world problem solving depends on collaboration and distributed knowledge
It rewards correct answers, while meaningful understanding requires building and revising models
It assumes stable knowledge, while learners must navigate constant change
The result is not failure in the traditional sense, but misalignment. The system continues to function, but it increasingly produces learners who are optimized for conditions that no longer dominate.
The Loss of Shared Shortcuts
For much of human history, learning was scaffolded by shared cultural representations like myths, religious stories, and widely understood narratives that compressed complex ideas into familiar forms. These acted as shortcuts, allowing learners to grasp new concepts by anchoring them to something already known.
As information has expanded, those shared anchors have fragmented. Students now encounter a wider range of representations, but with less common ground between them. The result is a subtle shift: more must be built explicitly, but the time allotted for learning has not changed.
This creates a hidden constraint. Without shared shortcuts, the path to understanding is longer, but the system still expects the same pace of progress. Rather than attempting to manufacture new universal shortcuts, which is an approach that is often fragile and context-dependent, the focus shifts to preparing learners to navigate information-rich environments. Students must learn to build, test, and adapt their own representations, and to coordinate those representations with others in real time.
The core tension
We are using a system designed for stability in a world defined by change
Until that tension is addressed directly, improvements will remain incremental and constrained. The problem is not that the system is broken. It is that it is built on assumptions that are no longer sufficient for the environment it now serves.
